The Pelican

The Pelican is a custom deck and screened-in porch project featuring decks on two separate levels of the home. Each deck serves a unique purpose and therefore didn't need to be connected via a staircase. The homeowners' choice of alternative framing and elegant finishes make this project a stunner!

Color Palette

For this two-level project, the homeowners selected TimberTech Advanced PVC decking in the color American Walnut. This color is a great choice because it complements the color scheme of their home and brings out some of the warmer brown tones in their roof.

We also love the client's choice of clean black railing and framing materials, which are accented by the crisp white posts around the perimeter. A beautiful, timeless palette!

Framing

This project features alternative framing in the form of composite lumber from Owens Corning. This particular product is available in several colors, and our homeowners chose black for their space. The composite lumber looks very similar to wood - and even includes realistic grain patterns - but will withstand the Minnesota climate better and much longer than natural lumber can.

Screened-In Porch

The screened-in porch area of this project features a continuation of the TimberTech American Walnut decking seen throughout both levels, along with custom glass panel railings and vinyl-and-screen windows by Sunspace Twin Cities. On the ceiling, we installed a gorgeous segmented beadboard ceiling to polish off the space.

Lighting & Railing

For added usable space, the homeowners opted for a drink rail around the entire perimeter of both decks, with added under-rail lights to create a soft glow after dark. Incorporating drink rail on the upper and lower decks also creates visual consistency throughout the project.

Private Space

The homeowners love to enjoy a cup of coffee together in the morning, and their lower deck allows them to do just that. Situated just off of their kitchen, the lower deck is the perfect cozy getaway.

Post Wraps

The deck posts for this project feature prominently along the backside of the house, so to tie them into the design and give them more visual weight, we added white post wraps.
