Spooky Deck Problems To Watch For

Education

It’s that time of year – Halloween – and here at Lakeside Decking we’re focusing on “spooky” deck problems that can be huge red flags and indicate a need for a new deck – take a look below at we suggest you look out for!

Problem: Sketchy Posts

If you’re concerned that your deck posts are rotting, damaged, unaligned, or loose, we suggest considering a full deck replacement. Typically we find that issues with deck posts signify larger structural issues that aren’t always fixed with a simple post repair or replacement.

Solution: Deck Replacement with Engineered Footings

At Lakeside Decking, we only use helical piles and ground screws as footings for our projects, which are extremely strong and perfect for installation year-round in Minnesota. Updating the footings for your new deck is a great way to ensure a long-lasting sturdy foundation for your outdoor structure.

Problem: Loose Railing

Loose railing indicates that it’s structurally compromised and no longer fully capable of doing its job: keeping the edge of the deck safe. The last thing you want is for someone to lean on the railing and end up toppling over the side of the deck. We don’t want your life to turn into “Final Fantasy”!

Solution: New Decking and Railing

Loose railing can happen due to the railing itself or the decking that it’s installed into. To be safe, it’s best to replace both to ensure that the new railing won’t fall victim to the same issue. We want your deck to be as safe as possible!

Problem: Old Wood Frame

Looking at your old wood frame, it might seem like it’s still in great condition despite its age. However, what most people don’t realize is that wood framing rots from the inside out, meaning you aren’t able to see the rot until the inside is completely destroyed by rot and it makes its way to the outside. By that point, it’s a race against time to get your deck into a safe condition again.

Solution: Alternative Deck Framing

When rot is present, a new deck frame is a must. However, there are a variety of deck framing materials that we offer that are completely resistant to rot. This includes steel framing from Fortress Building Products, aluminum framing from TimberTech, and composite framing from Owens Corning.
